Mônica Grohmann - Mosaics and Tiles

 

Mônica Grohmann creates hand-made ceramics, tiles and mosaics. The selection of 'Mini Mosaics' displayed here are multi-functional pieces assembled using elements of cut stone and ceramics, composed with unique hand-made centre-pieces and tessarae. All the elements are cemented with tile adhesive on wooden support and grouted.

Raku Mini Mosaics

The centre-pieces and tessarae are individually made using a porcelain body biscuit fired at 1000*C and re-fired rapidly in a raku kiln to about 900*C. Each centre-piece and element of tessarae is unique due to the unpredictable nature of Raku.

Each raku 'mini mosaic' is a composition where hand-built raku tiles and tessarae are arranged creating a design, generally inserted as a centre-piece, which is then assembled within a border made of cuts of stone or ceramics.

Stoneware Mini Mosaics

Pieces are made using elements cut of stone, travertine, polished marble, porcelain, granite, slate and clay assembled with hand-made centre-pieces, fired at stoneware temperatures.

Centre-pieces are mostly made of porcelain and grogged clays sometimes mixed with oxides. Clay, porcelain and natural organic elements are hand-pressed in molds to create textures and patterns. When in leather-hard state pieces are individually shaped and burnished. They are biscuit fired at 1000*C, glazed and re-fired at around 1250*C.

Uses

As part of an interior design project pieces can be used as focal elements to be displayed in surfaces and walls. Certain pieces can be used as elements of decoration in ceramic and stone flooring projects.

Specially effective as decorative inserts in surfaces of kitchens and bathrooms.

Elements of composition in mosaics for table tops, decorative wall panels, mirror frames, fireplaces and aga surrounds.

As decorative pieces they may be hung or displayed in other ways. Functionally, they can be used as pot-stands, coasters, etc.
